Reconstructing the history of horse breeding and its impact on the horse genome, epigenome and microbiome

Horses allowed us to travel well above our speed and rapidly spread germs, people and culture. They revolutionized warfare and stimulated agriculture. The 5,500 year long history of horse breeding cannot be reconstructed from modern genetics alone. I will build on the latest advances in ancient DNA research to gather an unprecedented dataset of horse genomes, epigenomes and microbiomes. This will provide a long-term legacy to the community and reveal the history of horse breeding and the biological processes underlying the domestication of the animal that most impacted our history.
